When it comes to business, the last place you would think to seek advice from is children, but believe it or not, they may be just the mentor you’ve been looking for all along! Take for example, billionaire and Tesla founder, Elon Musk. Recently, a 5th grader named Bria wrote him a letter suggesting an innovative advertising idea.
I’m sure that Tesla, being the 42 billion-dollar company that it is, has an entire marketing department and slew marketing executives, however, Bria’s simple but thought-out plan actually sparked an interest in Musk, and he responded promising Tesla would follow through with her idea.
You see, 5th graders may not be “business geniuses”, but what they do have is the creativity that sometimes adults lack. Often their ideas are so simple they make you wonder why you didn’t think of it before. We always put pressure on ourselves to come up with the next best thing, or come up with a product that will blow people away, but really people are looking for easy, simple solutions. Let's not complicate things.
We think that if we’re not tech gurus from Silicon Valley, people won’t take us seriously, or buy our product, but think of it like this - to a 4th grader, a 5th grader is a genius! You only need to be a few steps ahead of your customers to be able to service them. And THAT can be the core to your business.
Don’t overthink things. Be more like a 5th grader. Go with your gut instinct. Be fearless without fear of judgement or looking foolish in front of others. Bring that childish exuberance to your work environment - to not only make your job more fun, but help with the creative process as well.
